Lori has been caring for babies for as long as she can remember. She started babysitting when she was twelve years old and has always been enamored with newborns and babies. Whether it was volunteering to care for the babies in a MOPS group, working in church nurseries, leading the local chapter of Newborns in Need, or assisting at births, it has always been Lori’s desire to care for newborns and help new parents in any way she can.
A Newborn Care Specialist (NCS) is a professional, who has many documented hours of newborn care, has knowledge of the latest industry guidelines and standards, has taken many classes and trainings focused specifically on the care and development of a newborn, and is very aware of situations that may require referrals to doctors or other professionals that care for newborns.
While it is typical for NCS’s to work with families for the first 12-16 weeks after birth, it is also not uncommon for some NCS’s to work with families through the first year of life. Many NCS’s have cross-trained and also provide postpartum doula care, lactation support and education, sleep conditioning and/or sleep training, infant massage, private classes and much more.
Newborn Care Specialists help the family adjust to the newest member, whether it is the first baby, multiples or the 2nd or 3rd baby in the family. NCS’s work with the family’s goals and establish daytime and nighttime routines. It is the goal of the NCS to respect each family’s differences, provide education and calmness within the home and leave the family feeling confident and rested in the days and weeks to come.
Newborn Care Specialists work overnights, 24-hour shifts or daytime hours, again, depending on the needs of the family.
Whether it is assuring the home is stacked with baby necessities, discussing breast feeding or formula feeding, addressing health issues, making sure the baby has safe baby products, a safe sleep space, providing resources, or caring for the baby directly, parents can be assured that they can navigate the newborn stage with a professional walking alongside them every step of the way.
